Welcome to the Cross and Craft. This site is an attempt to compile all of the esoteric, mystical and magickal texts that have accumulated around the Judeo/Christian tradition over the millennia, and also to work out its meaning.

The Bible is replete with examples of magic, both for good and ill: a summoner raised the prophet Samuel's shade from the grave, Moses battled it out in a spell-off with the Egyptian magicians with the Ten Plagues, and even the New Testament abounds with exorcisms, amulets and the like.

Moreover, Christianity and Judaism continued on with the occult past Biblical times. The Jewish Kabbalah influenced Christianity's forays into the esoteric arts, and those were many more than is now commonly thought. Queen Elizabeth, author of the Protestant Reformation in England, financed the mystical works of John Dee. Christians in pre-Islamic Egypt and pre-Revolution Pennsylvania knew and used all sorts of magical spells that invoked the power of God, His saints, and His angels. Orthodoxy established an ascetic practice called hesychasm used to commune with the Divine. A Catholic pope even at one point advocated disseminating occult knowledge to all his priests.

The occult in these days is predominated by pagan and oriental influences. While there's certainly nothing wrong with this, there should be some kind of a comprehensive resource for those Christians and Jews looking for fulfillment of their esoteric sides without having to abandon their cherished faiths or look to someone else's. This site was built by two such people in order to remedy that, and it is my hope that it will provide you everything you need to further your study.

Sincerely,
-Polycarp, Site Admin
